Review: Garnier Ultimate Blends “The Sleek Restorer” Shampoo & Conditioner

I have to start off by saying that I hate shopping for shampoo and conditioner. I worry that if I purchase a product (on my student budget, by the way) I won’t be happy with it and it won’t work with my hair type.

This weekend I picked up the Garnier Ultimate Blends “The Sleek Restorer” Shampoo and Conditioner at Clicks for R40 each. So firstly, I only spent R80 on both products which I consider to be the best bargain EVER. This had to be too good to be true, right?

Wrong! Infused with coconut oil and cocoa butter, this shampoo and conditioner promised to deliver super-sleek smoothness for dry and frizzy hair. Boy oh boy, did this baby deliver.

IMG_6508

FACTS:

Coconut oil is a highly nourishing and protective oil from the tropical coconut to leave skin and hair smooth, soft and supple. It is an instrumental in taming dry and frizzy hair.

Cocoa butter is a rich butter, gathered from the far reaches of the Ivory Coast, smooths
and nourishes hair and skin with its delicious chocolate scent. It is renowned for taming frizz and fly aways.

REVIEW:

Anyone that knows me, knows that I’m not usually one to sing a products praise without putting it to the test. So this weekend I indulged in a nice hot shower and washed my hair with both products. My hair is extremely curly and I prefer to wear my hair straight because I find it easier to maintain. The problem with having naturally curly hair and constantly using heat tools to straighten? Frizz. I hate the fact that whenever I dry my hair, 5 minutes later I have this one patch of hair that just screams for help because it is so dry and frizzy. I dried my hair and went to bed and the next morning I was so surprised at how smooth and silky my hair felt. Another thing I cannot stand is when products claim to give you silky smooth hair, but end up making your hair feel oily. If my hair is oily it will show and cause a lot of dandruff. I did not have this problem when using the Garnier Ultimate Blends shampoo and conditioner and I had little to almost no frizz. What I loved most about these products, is that even though they are infused with oil, they didn’t leave my hair feeling heavy and oily. Rather it combated my dry strands and added moisture back into my hair.

For anyone wondering, the smell is quite sweet which I do not mind because I love sweet-smelling things. I can safely say that even though it is Tuesday, I washed my hair on Sunday evening and my hair still smells amazing!

So. In all fairness, I was a bit hesitant to try out this product just because I had seen it all over social media. I often worry that when you see a product become so popular it is either forced or in fear that a brand may not work with you. These products were affordable, worked well with my naturally curly hair, did not leave my hair feeling heavy and oily and smells too good to be true, YUM!

What shampoo and conditioner are you using at the moment?

Huge Back To School Affordable Try-On Clothing Haul!

–♡ CLICK PLAY TO WATCH THE VIDEO, PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE ♡–

Shopping is cheaper than therapy.

I recently went on a bit of a shopping spree for my second semester of varsity and I saved all the gifts from my birthday to make this affordable and collective haul for my viewers and readers! My previous back to school clothing try on haul which went up earlier this year has over 700 views which means I am so close to hitting that 1000 mark! I love when people interact with my content

I’m not sure if most of my readers know this but I live in the Southern hemisphere which means that we are approaching Spring and Summer soon so I made this both a summer and a winter clothing haul, so I could accommodate all the seasons approaching, wherever you are in the world !

Featured below are all the items in my video for those who don’t like watching YouTube videos. If you do watch my video please don’t forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel so I can create more content for you!

Starbucks Shirt (Purchased in Thailand) ♡

IMG_6415

I recently featured this post in an OOTD which if you missed it, you can find here. I love printed tee’s and tank tops because I feel that it adds so much to a simple outfit. What I love most about this is that it’s a piece of Thailand that I brought home with me and I’m a coffee lover so it’s no surprise that I cannot wait for Starbucks to get to Cape Town! At the moment we only have one in Johannesburg which is in a different city and a bit of a bummer. I love that the colours are simple and not too overboard as I feel that sometimes crazy prints can kill an outfit as a whole.

Dusty Pink Choker Bodysuit (Mr. Price) and Denim Shorts (The Fix) ♡

DSCN3929

I’ve mentioned in my videos that I am not a fan of the choker trend simply because I don’t like the way chokers look on me particularly. Mr. Price has recently came out with a new choker neckline for their shirts which I feel adds such a nice touch to an outfit. I wasn’t 100% sold on the body suit at first but after a while I realized that I liked the way it looked on me. Paired with this shorts which I purchased from The Fix, I love how the cut on the legs is different and almost a zig-zag pattern. If you go to The Fix on Thursdays and you are a student, if you present a valid student card you will get 20% off your purchase! Who doesn’t love a good deal?

Pink Rose Detailed Bomber Jacket (Exact) ♡

dscn3924.jpg

As I mentioned before, I’m currently still feeling the effects of Winter so this bomber was such a cute addition to my wardrobe! I love the rose detailing on it and I feel that it’s such a cute colour. I have a green bomber from The Fix but I feel that this one is much warmer and more durable for Winter time. I would usually pair this with black tights or skinny jeans and sneakers or my black booties featured in the video!

Dusty Pink Adidas Stan Smith (Sportscene) ♡

DSCN3932

For my 21st birthday I decided to add to my shoe collection by buying myself a new pair of sneakers. I have always been in love with the Stan Smith and I feel that it is so much more comfortable than the Superstar. I originally wanted the all white Stan Smith but when I saw this one I had to have it! Anyone that knows me knows that I love pink and gold and white so this was right up my alley.

Unfortunately I did not photograph all the items in my haul so if you would like to see the rest of my items then you can watch the video!

August Instagram Round Up

August was a great month, if I’m being completely honest. Not only did I celebrate my 21st birthday but I managed to be more consistent in terms of posting my Instagram. I did not like how my feed looked at all and I decided that I wanted a more cleaner feed with white detail (not an all white feed as that is too difficult for me to maintain). In August I loved the filter N2 on VSCO Cam and tended to go for a darker theme to my page. Are we friends on Instagram? If not you can give me a follow here and I’ll follow you back if you leave me your username in the comments! I love following other bloggers and getting inspiration for product shoots or flatlays.

I’m not sure how the rest of this month will play out with regards to my Instagram schedule because I have so many assignments and tests 3 weeks every week. I will however be posting videos every Friday, you can subscribe to my YouTube channel here.

Loving Lately ♡: My Top Picks From The Body Shop

It’s no secret that I am obsessed with everything pink, anything that smells amazing and good quality products. This is exactly what I get from The Body Shop every time I shop there and they never seem to disappoint. I love the fact that The Body Shop is cruelty free as I am trying my best to get into more cruelty free products. I was fortunate enough to be invited to an event hosted by The Body Shop where I got to learn a little bit more about some of the products featured and received the brushes as part of the goodie bag. (Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that my editing game has gone up a notch!?). I would just like to take a minute to state that this post is not sponsored by The Body Shop, and I only review products I am very impressed with and that I feel others will enjoy too.

These are just a few of my top picks from The Body Shop:

IMG_6468

♡ The Body Shop Strawberry Hand Cream (100ml = R90) ♡

IMG_6474

I love hand creams. Being a student, I’m constantly on the go and most of my lecture venues have terrible air conditioning which often dries out my hand. It doesn’t help that I’m very aware of germs and every time I have to use the university computers or printing labs, I have to use hand sanitizer which does not add any moisture whatsoever. Although I have the bigger version (you can find the travel size variant here), I still find it perfect for campus and I have no problem storing it in my bag. It’s a smooth almost gel-like formula with cold-pressed strawberry seed oil which ensures the most amazing scent. It does not leave my hands feeling greasy after use, which is perfect because I’m almost always taking notes.

♡ The Body Shop Travel Size Strawberry Shower Gel (60ml = R40) ♡

IMG_6475

I picked two of these up before I went to Thailand in July. I absolutely love the strawberry scented range of products from The Body Shop and I feel that this is such a perfect travel size. I had no problem fitting this in my travel bag. It’s soap free but still manages to keep my skin feeling amazing and so nourished. It also contains cold-pressed strawberry seed oil, similar to the hand cream. I think that R40 is a good price for a travel size and perfect for student budgets.

♡ The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in 014 Sydney Amaryllis, 020 Taipei Orchid & 022 Paris Peony (8ml = R90 each) ♡

IMG_6476

If I’m not mistaken, when I purchased these, they were R85 at the time. I must admit, for this price it really is worth it. I’ve been dying to get my hands on Windsor Rose and Cali Gerba. It glides on like a gloss but it does not dry out your lips at all even though it is Matte. There are 12 shades within the range which is a great colour variation in my opinion. I love that these last all day without re-application and I can eat while the matte lip remains in tact. This is definitely one of my holy grail products and my favourite has to be Taipei Orchid, as I’ve featured it in many of my Instagram photos.

♡ The Body Shop Slanted Contour Brush & Foundation Buffing Brush = R185 each  ♡

IMG_6473

I will admit that while this post is not sponsored, I did receive this in a goodie bag from The Body Shop event earlier this year. I’ve used both and washed them and they have still remained in very good shape. The contour brush is perfect for a clean and defined contour to give your face a “chizzled” effect. The bristles are synthetic and the handles are wooden. What really impressed me about the buffing brush is that this was perfect for foundation application in the sense that it did not leave any bristle marks on my face which is the main reason why I prefer using a beauty blender. This brush allows you to build the coverage of your foundation without absorbing too much product.

In my opinion, the only thing that really saddens me when it comes to The Body Shop is that you cannot order online and their stores are located quite a distance from where I live. You can purchase a few products from the Clicks website, but they do not offer all the products from The Body Shop. Other than that, I am crazy about all their products and look forward to my next visit in order to review some more products!

Behind The Blog: Get To Know Deeanne ♡.

—  THE GET TO KNOW ME TAG, FOR THOSE WHO DON’T FEEL LIKE A LONG, PERSONAL BLOG POST. CLICK PLAY TO WATCH ♡–

The year was 1996, and being as stubborn as I am (and always fashionably late, because I like making an entrance) I was already way overdue, as my mom had been in labour for almost 12 hours. Having nearly escaped death, I came into the big wide world on the 8th of August.

So. What’s in a name you ask? Well, originally my grandmother had asked that I be named Michaela as she seemed to grow very fond of it. Unfortunately the circumstances surrounding that name at the time were just not something my parents wanted to associate me with. So my parents decided that two names were better than one. So Deon and Jo-Anne came together to form Deeanne. The rest is pretty much history. Okay, maybe not so much.

I have stared death in the face not only once, but twice. When I was younger, I started suffering terrible symptoms and my mother’s instincts quickly kicked in, and I was rushed to hospital at the speed of light. I was then diagnosed with meningitis and so began my stay in hospital. Had it not been for my mom’s quick instincts, the doctors said I could have been blind, deaf or even worse.

I’m a fighter, you see. So don’t worry. I’m okay. My childhood was great. I loved primary school so much so that I became friends with everyone. The type of school I was fortunate enough to attend was one that had taught me so much and I enjoyed going to school. Having won numerous awards (no, really every year of primary school from grade one to seven I was invited to an award ceremony) I quickly worked my way up the academic ladder and eventually in my final year (grade 7) I was made head girl, was part of the prefect council and at one point was also a librarian. Little did I know that when I was in grade 1, I would find my passion. One day, while sitting in the doctor’s office, my dad told me the story about the boy who cried wolf. I was so fascinated by this story that I just had to tell my teacher. So what did I ask? I asked her if I could tell the class a story. My teacher was so impressed that she asked me to repeat the story to another grade one class and then a grade 3 class! That day I came home with 5 stars on my head and my parents were so shocked, they thought I had done something wrong!

High school was a difficult transition for me personally. Going from a school where you were friends with everyone to suddenly moving to a school with cliques was not easy for me. I did not like my school or any of the subjects they offered. However, I always excelled at creative writing and one day, my mom found one of my papers I wrote about how I missed being a kid (which I got 80% for, just by the way). She was so amazed by my writing skills that she told me it was definitely something I should look into.

Then came university. Having been rejected for my previous choices, I found out that there was still a course available that offered a waiting list. I was so desperate to get into UWC specifically that I did my very best to get in (that’s a post I want to write separately, so I’ll get into that another time). After being accepted 2 weeks into the semester, I fell in love with my university. I loved the friends I made and I really enjoyed writing (for anyone wondering, I’m a double major in English and Language and Communication Studies). Yet, I missed writing something I wasn’t forced to write and I wanted an outlet. So in 2015 I opened my laptop and started a blog.

And so began Thee Chic Critique. I think my first blog post was something about what I was loving at the moment (which included dark chocolate and Teen Wolf) and I built a community. People started following me on social media and was genuinely interested in the content I was creating. Then the unexpected happened, and my blog started experiencing technical difficulties which wouldn’t  allow me to write anymore.

That’s when I created a new blog, but I wanted a better name and something that was more personal. I noticed that on my previous blog, I would sign off all my blog posts with “Sincerely, Deeanne” and I loved how that sounded. Not only did my blog have a new name but it gave my new blog an identity. Something which resonated with over 200 bloggers. I now have over 3550 views in total and companies are willing to work with me on a regular basis.

Something I do want to say is that I never started my blog to work with companies and to get free things. I’ve always had a passion for telling stories. I enjoy writing so much so that sometimes I don’t even realize how long my posts are. Isn’t that what blogging is supposed to be about?

This year (2017) I have left the country for the first time, came out of a very toxic relationship and made the most amazing friends I could have ever asked for. I’m not sure what exactly the future holds for me. I’m in no rush to get there either. I’m currently focused on myself, my relationship with God and enjoying my university experience. I’d like to graduate Cum Laude from my university and work overseas for a while before going into journalism. At the same time I’d like to branch out and really take my blog and YouTube channel to the next level. I’ll be alright.

This is me, Deeanne. The girl behind the blog Sincerely, Deeanne.

OOTD: Starbucks At Sunset [Street Style]

“I’m nicer when I like my outfit”

I’ve never been the type of person who willingly dresses nice for university. The type of university I go to is extremely laid back, so much so that if you do dress “over the top” it’s really weird so I would never “over-dress” for campus. As much as I would like a minimalistic wardrobe, I tend to gravitate towards printed shirts that look good for days when I don’t really feel like dressing up. I feel that printed shirts are such a great statement piece that can make any outfit cool no matter how basic the other pieces are. I picked up this Starbucks shirt when I went to Thailand and I love Starbucks, so it’s no surprise that I have this shirt. I would say that I do have a coffee addiction and I cannot get through the day without a daily dose! I took a few photos of my outfit I wore two days ago and I am obsessed with how they turned out even though the sun was already setting.

To be honest, this is the first fashion post I’ve done in such a long time because in the past, I always used to have someone take photos for me and now I have to take all my photographs myself. I’m really happy with how my photographs turned out. In case anyone was wondering, I paired this outfit with white low cut converse. I asked my mom to take a full length photo but she’s still working on her skills!

Beauty Haul: What’s On My Beauty Desk?

“Home is where the make-up stash is”

I love shopping. I don’t care if it’s window shopping, online shopping or simply going into a store to browse around and make a mental list of all the items I should start saving for. Unfortunately, I am a student. And I do not own my own car, which not only makes it difficult for me to move around but also limits my time when I do go shopping, just because I have to work on someone else’s time schedule. Another downside to not having my own car is that I cannot have a part-time job which requires me to work during the week. I’ve mentioned before on my blog that I am a product promoter, so I stand in store and market products to shoppers in the hopes that they will buy it and make my company look good. I only work this job on weekends and this job is not permanent which means that only when a promotional product becomes available, I will be able to work (if I meet the criteria of the company).

Now imagine my excitement when I realized I had enough birthday money put away in a fixed account and enough to leave in my personal and splurge on myself? Yes please. I went to Clicks and Dischem (for any of my followers outside of South Africa, these are drugstore make-up stores with a pharmacy and other retail items, equivalent to a Walgreens) this weekend and picked up a few things to add to my collection.

IMG_6355

Eylure London Lashfix Strip Lash Adhesive (Dries Clear):

IMG_6349

I didn’t go into Clicks with the intention of purchasing this, but I do own many pairs of false lashes which often don’t come with adhesive. Not only that but I can’t stand the tiny bottle that comes in the packaging of most lashes as I find them very difficult to work with. I almost always misplace my lash glue and I can’t stand the pre-glued lashes. This seems like a good investment and I noticed that there are also many variants including some that dry black. I chose the clear due to the fact that it’s my personal preference.

Eylure London x Cheryl Flower Girl Lashes (114)

IMG_6351

My lash addiction is the bane of my mother’s existence. I only have a few boxes, yet she can’t stand when I come home with more of them. How could I not pick these babies up? I love how wispy and dramatic these lashes are and they do not look heavy which really ticks my boxes. I think what I love most, and what caught my eye was the featherlight feel. I wear glasses and often find that my eyes get really sore and irritated if I wear heavy lashes. These are re-usable so I will have no problem using them again and there is a mini adhesive in the box.

Eylure London Lashes Designed By Kimberly (118)

IMG_6350

I don’t have a lash addiction… I just love lashes! Picked up my holy grail lashes from Eyelure. This is a brand I swear by and I love these particular lashes because they add length and look fairly natural. I think there’s something about how natural these look on me that keeps me coming back for more every single time.

L.A Girl Pro Conceal in Natural

IMG_6352

For those of you who watch my YouTube channel tutorials, you would know that for a long time I had been using the L.A Girl Pro Conceal in Creamy Beige. I felt that the shade was too close to my skin colour so I went a shade lighter and picked up this baby from Dischem. For some reason I’ve never seen L.A girl in Clicks. I wanted to try a few other products from L.A girl but I was on a time crunch so I didn’t have the time to swatch and browse.

Essence Long-Lasting Lipstick (25)

IMG_6356

I never used to like lipsticks when I was younger and to this day I still find myself wiping it off before I eat. I saw this colour while browsing the Essence Cosmetics section at Clicks and I fell in love. I received a gorgeous package from Essence with never-before-seen products and I’m going to film a tutorial with this bright pink lipstick tomorrow!

Rimmel London Match Perfection Foundation (303 True Nude)

IMG_6353

I desperately needed a new foundation as my Yardley London Stayfast became really watery and I couldn’t use it anymore. There was nobody in store who could colour match me so a little hack that I found was that if you have a particular foundation already, pick it up and compare it to the other shades in store. Boom, instant colour match with no testing needed. I hope this shade is correct but I won’t be too phased if it isn’t because I’ve been dying to pick up The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops.

What’s on your beauty desk at the moment? x

Varsity Vlog 01: Lectures, Apartment Shopping & Convertible Rides!

“Dream big, work hard, stay focused and surround yourself with good people.”

–♡ CLICK PLAY TO WATCH ♡–

I love university. I love the fact that it’s nothing compared to high school and you’re surrounded by people who are aiming for the same goals as you, which inevitably is to graduate.

I want to write a separate post detailing my university experience and what university was like, but just for some background purposes, I thought I’d fill my readers in on some information. I attend the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, which is one of the top universities in the country. I am currently in my third year of university, studying a Bachelor of Art and majoring in English and Language and Communication Studies. I am an aspiring journalist with a passion for writing and reviewing products. My main goal for my final year is to complete my bachelor Cum Laude (with an average of 70% across all modules).

In this vlog I take you with me to campus and you get to meet some of the gems I call my friends. Then I have a busy day and end up going apartment shopping. The best part of this vlog (in my opinion) is definitely the convertible ride at the end!

My university experience was not all sunshine and roses and I never want my viewers or readers to feel that I’m trying to portray “the perfect life”. If you’ve been a follower of mine for a long time you would know that I have come a long way since my days of being bullied in high school, to coming out of a 4 year long toxic relationship.

This video blew up so quickly, if you would like to see more then please subscribe to my channel so I can create more content!
