It’s been a whirlwind of a week.

If you follow me on Instagram, you would know that this week I have gone back to campus to kick off my second (and final) semester of university. The workload has been unreal and I still have to do some work as soon as I finish up this blog post. However, I wanted to change up my upload schedule and try it on Sundays. I haven’t really seen a staggering amount of views flood in, however, I have officially hit my 700 subscriber milestone! I am so grateful for my little YouTube family and I want nothing more than to create content regularly and make sure that I’m using my platform to uplift and inspire more women in the South African industry.

As it is my birthday month in August, I will be having a 700 subscriber + birthday giveaway, so if you’d like to enter, make sure you’re subscribed to my YouTube channel and following me on Instagram.

My Realistic Birthday Wish List

If you’re reading this, my birthday is on the 8th of August and you may e-mail me for my delivery address, haha.

I love birthdays. I’d like to think that it’s one of the best days of the year, because you’re the centre of attention and nobody can take that day away from you. Being a Leo, I love being in the spotlight. I always make sure that nothing ruins my day. Doesn’t matter if I have 20 assignments due the week after or if I have pressing errands, this day is all about me and I was fortunate enough to be born the day before a public holiday, so I get to party the night and sleep it off the day after. However, whenever people ask what I want, I always hit a blank. This happens every time and then after my birthday, I always ask myself why I never asked for something simple or pushed people in the right direction. This year I’m leaving it here on my blog, except for my mom and dad. I think it’s about time I started driving car of my own, don’t you think? Just kidding!

The items on this wish list is relatively affordable and things that are quite easy to shop for. With that being said, I don’t HAVE to get these gifts. It’s the thought that counts. This is just an idea of what I’d really like.

Urban Decay Comfort Matte Lipstick in “BackTalk”

3605971155673_vicelipstick_comfortmatte_backtalk

Come to think of it, I have absolutely no matte lipsticks in my collection. I find them quite uncomfortable (apart from The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquids). Nude lipsticks in particular are quite cute and add a subtle look to a dramatic eye (which I have started doing more lately). This is relatively affordable and I think the packaging is so elegant. Due to the fact that I will be heading into the world of business soon, I don’t want to go overboard, so I’ll have to revert back to subtle looks. This is sold on the Urban Decay website and at the V&A Waterfront for only R250,00.

Ardell Wispies

clicks.co.za

Being a YouTuber, I am always filming YouTube tutorials. To me, looks aren’t complete without lashes. These double as both natural and dramatic. Not to mention, these are very comfortable to wear. I wore this in my sunset eye look that I did on my channel not too long ago and I have to say that I was so impressed with how easy it was to apply these lashes. I would definitely recommend these lashes, but they are a bit pricey for drugstore lashes. These are sold at Clicks for R79,95.

Yoga Mat

yoga mat

If you follow me on Instagram, you would know that I’ve been getting more serious about my health. High blood pressure and heart ailments run in my family and we don’t always eat very healthily. I genuinely enjoy yoga and Zumba. I go to Zumba every Saturday and when I’m at home, I do the dances on my Xbox. I’d like to start my mornings off by doing yoga, but I don’t have a mat. This is one thing I really need and I feel can be quite affordable if you know where to look. I saw this one on Takealot for R250 and I’m obsessed with the reversible side of it.

You are a badass at making money by Jen Sincero

51aNcGMEf9L._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

You are a Badass was my saving grace this holiday because I didn’t really go anywhere. Practical advice goes such a long way when it comes to changing your life around. I still have to do my book review on it, but I’m not finished and I don’t want to finish it because it’s so good. If I had this book, I’m sure I’d finish up though. I have no idea how to work with money and i’m a very impulsive buyer. I had to get rid of my credit card because it was causing me to spend money that I didn’t have and only made more debt for me, which as a student I could not pay off. I know for a fact that this book will be great if it’s anything compared to You are a Badass. This is available on Takealot and is so cheap when purchased from the right stockist!

Garnier Micellar Water

garnier micellar water

I don’t really need this, but it’s nice to have. I recently started filming more tutorials and that means having to clean my face more and having to take off all my make-up when I’m done. This micellar water is the best make-up remover and does not make my skin break out or irritate it at all. This is one of my holy grail products and I would highly recommend it for all my make-up junkies. It’s sold at Clicks for R63,99 for a full size.

Eyelash Applicator

Once again, in relation to filming videos, I always need to put my lashes on. If you’ve ever applied lashes, you would know what a pain it is to use your fingers. It can go either way and I hate when my lashes won’t work with me. This one is available from SwiitchBeauty for only R80,00.

Old School Vans

VANS

I have a huge love for shoes, so naturally I’m a sneaker and heels kind of girl. The Vans Old School Sneaker has become somewhat popular recently and I am 100% here for it. I love how versatile it is, as it can be worn with both shorts and jeans. I feel that high tops look untidy with shorts and in the summer they’re just not practical. Oh, and I need new sneakers.

Pop Socket

Pretty much self-explanatory. My brother sat on mine that has pizza’s on it, so mine looks absolutely horrible. These are great for when I have to take photos of my make-up and I need to hit all the right angles.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

urban decay

Ok, maybe this one isn’t really that realistic. I’ve only ever heard great things about this product which makes it such a wish list item. If anyone has ever used this, please let me know.

Benefit Porefessional Pearl Primer

For that dew that should come through in the winter time. I haven’t really read the reviews on this but it looks like such an interesting product to use!

Pepsi Top H&M

If you follow me on Instagram, you would know that I wanted this shirt but when I went back for it, it was gone. I love this top so much and I would do anything to get it back!

How To: Flawless Foundation + First Impressions: The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow

–CLICK PLAY TO WATCH, PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE–

DISCLAIMER: This post is NOT sponsored and all links in this post are NOT affiliate, just here to help you out if you would like to purchase.

Foundation is always an essential part of my beauty routine. I particularly enjoy the art of painting my face and creating a veil which can either mask a pretty nasty breakout or accentuate my natural dew. However, foundation is one of those things that can be really tricky if you’re a beginner. Questions that may arise for a first time often include: how do I know what my correct shade is? Why does my foundation turn orange? How do I look more matte if I’m oily or more dewy if my skin is dry?

Look no further, I’ve got you.

In this particular video, I’ve addressed all the issues related to foundation that can take your foundation game from 0 to 100 really quickly. I’ve also decided to compile a blog post to let in on all my tips and tricks, holy grail products and everything you need to know to step up your foundation game.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: CLEAN UP YOUR ACT

A clean face is essential before applying foundation. This is because your foundation is more likely to look less flawless if you’re applying foundation to dirty skin (which could lead to a nasty breakout) or even worse, reapplying a new layer of foundation on top of an previous one.

If you’re an oily girl like me, you’ll know the struggle when it comes to being shiny. When I did my research about oily skin and applying foundation to skin that’s oily (and has not been cleaned), it can actually cause your foundation to turn orange in colour. This is due to a process called oxidation.

Oxidation: A chemical reaction that happens when chemicals in the foundation react to oxygen or excess oils.

In order to remove any dirt and excess oils on my skin, I use my cotton rounds and Garnier Micellar Water which is suitable for even sensitive skin. It retails for about R64,95 for a full size and is available at most drugstores. I purchased mine from Clicks. It removes make-up too so it doubles for when you need to take your face off. I have the on-the-go travel size and it lasted so long, considering that I’ve had it for about 3 months now. I am obsessed with it and it does not irritate my skin because it is perfume-free. It’s excellent for removing make-up, but I’ll have a detailed post on it in the near future. I make sure to clean my entire face, all the way down to my neck, because we’ll be applying foundation there too.

Something that goes hand in hand with cleaning your face, is getting hair out of it too. The dirt from your hair can get into your skin and can cause break-outs. When applying make-up, always ensure that your hair is out of your face.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE – MOISTURIZE

Now that our skin is clean and good to go for the rest of our make-up application, we need to moisturize our skin. Moisturizer ensures a smooth canvas for make-up application and helps your primer (which is the next step) adhere to the moisturizer, making sure it does not get lost in the skin.

In this tutorial, I moisturized with The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow Face Mist. You can use a primer water, setting spray or a lotion-type moisturizer. I used to use the Isabella Garcia Day Defense Moisturizer and I’m a huge fan of the African Extracts Day Lotion. If you want a more matte finish, I’d recommend an oil-free moisturizer or setting spray.

In all honesty, my face absorbed all the mist that was sprayed onto my face. It didn’t really leave me with a healthy glow below my foundation, but did a great job at hydrating my skin like a moisturizer would.

PRIME TIME

Once your moisturizer has settled into your skin, it’s time to move onto primer. Primer is going to work hand in hand with your moisturizer to give your skin exactly what it needs. When buying a primer, a good rule of thumb is to go for something you know you need. Are your pores visible when it comes to make-up application? If so, a pore minimizer should do the trick. A bit oily and want a more subtle look? An anti-shine primer is what you’re looking for. After a little bit of glow? An illuminating primer will help to give your skin a natural glow.

In this tutorial I opted for the LA Girl Pro Prep HD Smoothing Face Primer. I prefer applying primer with my hands, all over my face with a specific focus on my T-Zone and pore problem areas. This minimizes the appearance of my pores and helps my skin look extra smooth.

FOUNDATION STATION

Here’s the fun part. I love everything about foundations and I’ve been in the make-up game long enough to know exactly what works and what doesn’t. The right tools are essential for the job. There are two types of foundation brushes. A buffing brush helps to push product into the skin. My holy grail foundation brush is the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. There is also a flat foundation brush which is great for applying foundation, however I’m not a fan of the streaks it leaves in my face.

It’s important to know what coverage you’re after in a foundation.

Coverage: the opacity or transparency of the foundation (ranges from light to medium to full)

If you want something full coverage, you’d go for a foundation that you’re going to throw on for events or maybe to cover acne scarring. This ensures that the skin doesn’t really show through the foundation. In this video, I used the LA Girl Pro Coverage foundation in Warm Beige. I love this foundation with all my heart and soul because it’s buildable and it does not feel heavy on my skin.

IMG_1493

If you’re after an everyday foundation, you’d go for a BB Cream or tinted moisturizer.

BB Cream/Tinted Moisturizer: Lighter in texture than a foundation and is often used to even out skin tone.

I used to love BB Creams but I just cannot get myself to wear make-up everyday. I firmly believe that you need to give your skin a break from wearing make-up because wearing make-up everyday speeds up the ageing process and can result in acne breakouts.

To find your shade of foundation, you can ask a skincare consultant to colour match you.

Colour match: Finding your correct shade of foundation through a series of testing colours within your shade range.

I personally hate it when people colour match me because I’ve been colour matched incorrectly twice before and I hate spending my hard-earned money only to waste it on something that is either too light, too dark or just makes me look orange. My hack for finding my correct shade is taking a foundation I know I’m a 100% match in and swatching other foundations next to it. That way, I know one is my perfect shade and that needs to be what I go for. I also find out that there are now apps which help you find your correct shade online. I personally haven’t tried it but I would like to. Would you like to see a video on that?

Next, we’re going to use our foundation brush and just drag all the product on our skin. Make sure to get your neck too because we can’t have our neck and our face being two different colours. In order to ensure even application of the foundation, you want to go in with a damp beauty blender. The one I used in the video is not from Beauty Blender but I remember buying it at Dischem and it does exactly the same job and isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg.

Damp Beauty Blender: Allows for streak-free blending and dewy finishes.

It’s so important to smooth out products on the skin, because if you applied too much in a certain area, that is where it is going to cake on you.

Cake: Where foundation or concealer sits on the skin and looks visibly thick instead of smooth and seamless.

FLAWLESS FINISH

This is where The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow really shined (literally)ย  in this video. When finishing your foundation, you can either use a setting spray (provided that you have all your other make-up on) or you can go more matte and use a setting powder instead.

Setting Powder: Blurs fine lines and pores and ensures that make-up stays in place all day.

Overall, my first impressions on the product was that it definitely did its job, only when it came to finishing off my foundation. It didn’t really do anything as a primer.

Have you learned anything new from this video/blog post? If so, let me know. I love creating content that allows me to educate my viewers at the same time.
