Chit Chat – Here’s a life update and something I think you need to hear

My new job, getting back into creating content and future plans.

I swear I haven’t written a post in so long that I had to wipe the dust off of my log in and was somewhat questioned when I started writing again (my blog went “is that really you, Deeanne). But here I am, with a life update about anything and everything.

Let’s start with why I have been so quiet lately. If you’re not subscribed to my YouTube channel or following me on Instagram, then you may or may not know that I recently started my internship as an intern content producer at a really big company. As excited as I was to start my new journey, I was scared that my own content would take a back seat because I would be so busy and I was right. For me, my day starts at 5AM when I wake up from my (short) evening slumber and then it takes me about 25-35 minutes to get to work. Then from 6:30 all the way to 14:30, my day consists of creating content for my platform and basic admin tasks. It takes me about an hour to get home in the afternoons depending on traffic (I once sat in traffic for 2 hours, bless my soul and thank God I drive an automatic car) and when I get home I have to take my rabbit and guinea pigs outside for about 2 hours before I have a power nap. In between all that time I’m thinking of all the things I have to do for the next day and trust me, I don’t even get a chance to breathe, never mind go to the gym. It’s been a good few months of learning though and has really opened my eyes into the world of journalism.

On that note – I have decided that I am not sure if I will be staying with the company I am currently employed with after giving it a lot of thought. I may move to a different department and stay in the same building but it depends if there are any vacancies once my internship is over. I am currently a health writer, and as much as I enjoy writing, I felt that this was out of my comfort zone (which was great in hindsight, but in all honesty, I don’t really know that much about health), but will definitely open doors for me. I really want to work for a magazine. I’ve had my heart set on it since I was young and I think that it would suit me better as I love beauty, fashion and lifestyle. I’ve been working on my photography a lot lately and I think that it has made me realize that I want a new challenge in terms of creativity. Travel writer is still the goal, but it’s where jobs are available that moves you in different directions.

I miss writing. I always tend to make a bunch of excuses as to why, but after evaluating my situation, I’ve come to realize that it’s hard not having a photographer or anyone who can help in terms of taking photographs for OOTD posts etc. Once I figure out how I’m going to move around it, I’m sure I’ll be able to put more time into writing. As for my YouTube channel, the difficult part is finding the time to create the content and fit it into my hectic schedule, which is why I’ve started with printables. I love a plan I can see in front of me and that’s exactly what I want to start doing.

In terms of myself, for once I can say that I am really happy and I am learning to walk away from things that are not meant for me. Maybe Mark Manson was right, the secret to a great life really is choosing what to give a f*ck about (From the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck). You can either be a victim of your circumstances or you can choose to rise above them and use them as learning experiences, the choice is up to you.

If you’re still reading this, I hope you know that you are loved, abundantly. You’re amazing and if you haven’t heard it today, I’m proud of you. Everything happens in it’s own time, trust the process. You will get the job, you will graduate, you will find that special someone. For now, enjoy where you are, because nobody ever gets the same moment twice. Take a long bath, spoil yourself and tell yourself you look pretty.

Thank you Lord for new opportunities and growth. Even if I am not where I would like to be right now, I know you’ll open doors to get where I would like to be.

Sending love and blessings, always.

Dramatic Plum Smokey Eye Tutorial – Affordable Graduation Glam Series

Never apologize for being a strong, independent woman.

The creativity bug has bitten me and I’m not going to lie, I like it. I wanted to create a variety of graduation looks because everyone is different and I’d like to cater to a variety of tastes and of course, skin tones.

I’ve always been one to shy away from bold looks but I thought I’d step out of my comfort zone and try something a bit more daring, and this is what I came up with. I won’t lie, I’m extremely impressed with how this turned out and I feel that I have definitely come a long way in terms of make-up.

My next graduation look is going to be a little more on the glamorous side of things and I cannot wait to show you what I come up with. If you’d like to see more, just click the video above and subscribe to my YouTube channel. If you’d like to be alerted when I post a new video, simply tap the bell notification next to the subscribe button and there you go – you’re all set!

What look do you think I’ll be creating next? I’m also accepting video suggestions at the moment because I need ideas for new content!

Soft Smoke – Affordable Golden Graduation Glam

“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes – understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success” – Arianna Huffington

Graduation season. A time in my life I’ve looked forward to from the moment I first witnessed graduates line up outside my university’s hall. It’s something about the way the girls grace the scene with their beautiful dresses and high heels and how dapper the men look in their suits. It’s a really big day, and rightfully so, because we as students have worked really hard to get here and it’s not everyone that can say that they’ve made it to the finish line. On your big day, the last thing you should worry about is what kind of make-up look to go for – that’s where I come in. I’ve been working on a series for graduation looks to give you a bit of inspiration for different tastes. In this look specifically I wanted something soft yet dramatic at the same time. I love how subtle yet effective this look is for graduation with golden tones to suit a variety of skin tones. I’ve listed all the products featured in the video’s description bar for easier access.

For these tutorials, I’ve tried to make it as drugstore friendly as possible so that people who may still be on the job hunt do not have to pay an arm and a leg just to look good on graduation day! The only products that I can honestly say are not drugstore would be the SwiitchBeauty products, but I did recommend alternatives in my videos.

The final look:

IMG_6258

What kind of look would you like to see for graduation? I’m working on something a little bit more dramatic for my next look and I promise it won’t be as long, I just thought I’d do one “get ready with me” and the others will probably be voiced over in order to make it easier for viewing.

How To Start a Successful YouTube Channel – My Secret Tips + Tricks!

I recommend watching the video, as I go into great detail regarding the points I discuss in this blog post.

YouTube has surely become one of the best platforms to showcase a variety of content. Whether you’re into lifestyle, fashion, beauty or fitness, there is always something for people to watch on YouTube. Now, what happens when you’ve become so inspired from sitting in front of the screen and watching that you decide to move behind the screen and start filming? YouTube is a great way to build an audience and to create killer content to share with the rest of the world. However, YouTube is not everything that it is cut out to be and I am here to shed some light on what it really takes to be a content creator and if you’re genuinely serious about becoming one, how to start a successful YouTube channel.

Know why you start a YouTube channel

I think it’s important to know why you want to start a channel. A lot of the time, when people message me on Instagram and tell me they want to start a YouTube channel, they are somewhat confused when I ask them why. I’m not asking to be rude, but it’s because some people start a channel without a goal in mind and it results in their channel ending up dying because they didn’t realize what it takes to start a channel. YouTube is commitment and requires a lot of effort and consistency.

Doing YouTube for money/press drops

If you’re starting a channel thinking that you’re going to make dollar signs, I have bad news for you my friends. Am I saying you can’t make money from YouTube? Not at all. I have made money from YouTube even though I believe I only had 600 subscribers at the time, so it is possible. However, you won’t see money when you start out on YouTube because YouTube has now enforced a rule which states that unless you have reached a certain watch time or you have 1000 subscribers, you are not allowed to monetize your videos, which means that ads will not run on your videos and you will not make money. Press drops usually only come with quite a following and even so, it still requires a lot of patience and consistency on YouTube.

Just start

The one comment I get almost all the time when people want to start a YouTube channel is that they’re afraid of what other people are going to say. I think that I forgot to mention in this video that your content is essentially going to be seen by the rest of the world. If you feel that you are too sensitive to deal with criticism and bullying, I wouldn’t recommend starting a YouTube channel as I take mental health very seriously. However, if you think you can handle it then just remember that people always going to have something to say. Everytime someone views your video to “make fun of you” that’s a view for your channel which is a bonus for growth. I guarantee that the people you go to high school with won’t matter in 5-10 years from now. If you enjoy creating content, just do it!

Equipment and my favourite apps

I recommend starting on your smartphone if you do not have a camera because you don’t need the best camera on the market to start your channel. I started off with a basic Nikon L330 and once I saw growth in my channel, I decided to move into a new direction with higher quality content, which only came with 800 subscribers might I add. Being close to 1000 was the push I needed to up my game and now I film with a Canon EOS200D and I use a 18-55mm lens. You don’t have to have the best camera to start off with, rather work with what you have and once you see growth then you can move on to better quality.

Consistency

I would not recommend YouTube for someone who is not consistent. When people view your channel, they want to subscribe to people who are going to keep pushing out content. I feel like when you go missing for long periods of time, it hurts your channel because people can see that you’re not going to be consistent and then they probably won’t stick around to see more content from you. Am I saying you have to post everyday or week? Absolutely not. But it helps to have a schedule for yourself so that you don’t disappear completely.

Growing your channel and SUB4SUB

I talk a lot about this topic in detail and I definitely recommend watching this part of the video because I go into detail about sub 4 sub and how it hurts your channel and is an ineffective growth tool.

Descriptions

Why people leave their descriptions blank I will never know. It’s so important for your audience to know where to find you and important links you may want to share with your audience. If brands want to work with you,  they’ll contact you from the email in your description, but if you leave it blank then they’ll move on and find someone else instead.

Collaborations

Don’t be shy to reach out to other YouTubers. I honestly think that a sure way to grow your audience is definitely to reach out to someone who has more or less a similar number of followers as you and asking them if they would like to collab with you. You don’t have to physically be with them, it’s literally just mentioning their socials and doing a similar video. People like to find other content creators and I can guarantee both people will benefit from doing collaborations.

Sharing your content

I don’t think I can stress the importance of sharing your content enough. If you upload a video to a channel where you have 5 subscribers, chances are if you’re lucky you’ll get 5 views. The reason I say ‘if you’re lucky’ is because not all subscribers are active subscribers. You can have 100 subscribers, and get 20 views. There are a ton of reasons for this but the most important aspect is getting your content out there. I’ve mentioned that some of my favourite platforms to use are Twitter, Instagram Stories, targeted Instagram sharing accounts and Facebook Groups. A few tools I use are TubeBuddy and VidIQ which are both really helpful plugins for choosing the right tags for your videos and providing stats so that you can see what is working and what isn’t.

Do you have a YouTube channel? I’d love to know in the comments! Also, don’t forget to leave me any tips or tricks you’ve found to help grow your channel x

September Goals & Reflection [Day 2: 30 day blogging challenge]

I know I’m a bit late on the bandwagon, but happy Spring everyone!

I love September because it marks new beginnings. For me, this month has brought some great surprises: one being that I was on the radio! Yesterday I won a competition on Heart 104.9 where I get to go to any nature reserve in Cape Town [Boulders Beach penguin is honestly at the top of my list right now]. August brought a lot of blessings, particularly turning 22. I’ve really had a lot of time to think and I’ve also made the decision not to take life so seriously. Your 20’s are supposed to be the wildest years of your life and I feel as though I’m not living the way I would like to and I’m not seeing as much as I should. However, this is also the month where I have to knuckle down and apply for jobs. I am so excited for the new chapter in my life but I feel that with this, comes great responsibility. So I decided to put my goals down in my virtual diary and get the ball rolling:

Get serious about blogging

I figured that every year, R150 goes off of my student account to cover the cost of my domain. I can’t have a blog and not utilize it. It doesn’t make sense to be paying for something I don’t use. When I stopped blogging, my stats started going down and I just didn’t feel motivated to produce content here because I was so focused on my YouTube channel. By doing the 30 day blogging challenge, I’m pushing myself to get back into blogging and to remember why I fell in love with it in the first place. This goes hand in hand with posting regularly to Instagram. I need to get my stats up so that I can reach my goal of 1000 followers.

I have a love-hate relationship with this goal. Books are expensive. I love to read but I hate spending money. When I stopped working this year, it was because I wanted to put more time and effort into my studies, after realizing that I could not graduate cum laude due to the fact that I failed an exam and was required to write a supplementary, it really made me see things differently. I then lost interest in my studies, partly due to the fact that I’m not doing what I love.

Stop spending money unnecessarily

I love to spend money on things I honestly don’t need. Make-up, shoes, clothes, you name it and if I think I can get it at a steal, I want it. I’ve been so careless with my spending this year and this realization came to me when I watched a video of a girl who stuffs envelopes with money to limit her spending. Although I’m probably not going to go to the extent of limiting myself to the last cent, I would like to try saving at least R100 a month. If I succeed, I’ll be on the road to putting money away and investing it so that it can grow rather than having the urge to spend it again.

Meet new people

This is terribly embarrassing for me to admit, but I have no idea how to go about meeting new people or networking. This hasn’t always been a problem for me, only in recent times when my confidence took a knock in high school. I used to love meeting new people and my goal is to meet at least 5 new people this month. This is to move out of my comfort zone and stop being afraid of going for things I’ve been scared to do before.

Take more risks

All my life, I feel like I’ve always played it safe. After watching the movie Ibiza, I feel like I have a new found love for doing things without thinking and following your heart. I resonate with Harper on another level. I say this with a sense of responsibility at the same time, because I’m sure that not everything happens the way it does in the movies.

Learn to love myself more

I am my biggest critic sometimes. I feel like I never take time out to assess my own needs and treat myself with the things that I deserve. That needs to change and I feel that without love, one doesn’t really have anything.

What are some of your goals for September?

  45. Last sport you played?
  46. Last song you sang?
  47. Favourite chat up line?
  48. Have you ever used it?
  49. Last time you hung out with anyone?
  50. Who should answer these questions next?

On that note, this is my first blog post for the 30 day blogging challenge. I have decided to get my views up because for some reason my views and interaction on posts have been relatively low. The last time I did the 30 day blogging challenge, my interaction and stats sky-rocketed and I just enjoyed challenging myself when it came to new and innovative posts. If you would like, I’ll have a post related to a bunch of blogging ideas so that you can start your challenge too!

Purple & Orange Sunset Eye (Perfect for medium to dark skin tones) | Collab with Nydia Nel

–CLICK PLAY TO WATCH, PLEASE LIKE/SUBSCRIBE/COMMENT–

If there is one thing I love, it’s a dramatic eye look. I’ve done a few in the past, however I’ve never experimented with colour before. I was approached by a fellow South African YouTuber, Nydia Nel on Instagram who asked me to recreate an eye look. I asked her why don’t we both do our take on this eye look so that we can do them for different skin tones (my skin tone is relatively darker than Nydia’s). Needless to say, with a week of preparation and a few struggles here and there, we both pulled it off and I could not be happier with the results. She put a lot of hard work into the video and it really shows in the stunning look she put out. Don’t forget to check her out below and subscribe to her channel!

–NYDIA’S VIDEO–

For this look, we both had different takes on it. I went a bit more dramatic whereas Nydia focuses on more neutral mauve tones in her look. This is the beauty of make-up, it’s different for everyone. With that being said, I think both looks are definitely a great take on our recreation.

Swiitch Beauty Unicorn Sauce Palette Review & Selena Gomez 2017 Met Gala Inspired Pink Eyeshadow Tutorial

Told you I’d be back with a few looks.

Hello lovelies! I hope you’ve had a great week and that you’re ready to party up a storm this weekend, or if you’re like me you’re ready to relax and have cute Instagram brunch dates (the single blogger life is sad sometimes).

In this video I reviewed the SwiitchBeauty Unicorn Sauce Palette and also recreated this eye look Selena Gomez wore to the Met Gala earlier this year:

My Thoughts On The Unicorn Sauce Palette ♡:

Shipping & Shopping Experience ♡:

I ordered this palette as part of the Pink Friday sale, which is Swiitch Beauty’s version of Black Friday. I ordered my palette at midnight on the dot and did not experience any problems with checkout or paying for the palette. There was an option for express shipping or normal shipping. I paid for normal shipping and the palette arrived at my house the Monday morning at 10AM I remember that I still wrote an exam that morning and left early so I could get home early. I have to give a big thumbs up to SwiitchBeauty for delivering so quickly. The price wasn’t heavily discounted and I ended up paying around R265,99 in total which is relatively close to R350. Therefore, I’m really not impressed with the so called ‘sale price’ that they seemed to offer.

Packaging ♡:

The packaging of the palette is one of the best in my opinion. It has a holographic finish and looks amazing! The palette contains 35 intensely pigmented, buttery smooth, mythical eyeshadows. The shades range from yellows, oranges, pinks, violets, greens and blues to black.

Swatches and Colour Pay Off ♡:

I have to say that I was relatively impressed with the swatches of the shades in comparison to the Slays For Days Palette. I was not impressed with the orange shade in the Slays For Days Palette but this palette blew me away. I loved the shades I used on my eyes. They blended well and there was only fallout in the palette but not on my face. I was honestly so impressed, that I rated my palette a solid 10/10. I cannot wait to create colourful looks with this palette!

The Completed Recreation ♡:

This is the finished look I tried to recreate from Selena, I really love how this turned out!

Swiitch Beauty Slays For Days Palette | Worth The Hype?

If there’s one thing my readers should know about me, it’s that I’m brutally honest.

–CLICK PLAY TO SEE MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS, PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE–

Last month, I ordered the Slays For Days Palette from Swiitch Beauty. If you don’t know, Swiitch Beauty was founded by Rabia Ghoor. She is a South African entrepreneur who left high school in Grade 10 to persue a career in the beauty industry with her own startup named Swiitch Beauty. I love the fact that she is so young and started her own business. More power to you girl!

Swiitch Beauty offers a selection of products which you can find here and I have to say that the selection is quite impressive. I opted for the Slays For Days Palette which offers 35 intensely pigmented, buttery, warm toned shadows. It retails for R350 and I happened to get mine with free shipping.

First off, when the package arrived it was so securely wrapped which meant so much to me because it ensured that the palette didn’t arrive broken and that all the shadows were in tact when they came to me. The packaging of the box is absolutely stunning, with rose gold lettering on the front of the box. Another important note is that this palette is cruelty free. A while ago, Love, Kaylyn wrote a blog post with all the details which you can find here I absolutely love her blog and her aesthetic is to die for!

A question that seems to be on everyone’s lips is where exactly Swiitch Beauty’s products are manufactured. I personally have no idea,  but there has been some talk about people spotting the products without the brand logo from China. I personally do not mind, as long as they are cruelty free and no animals are harmed in the process!

One thing I have to say is that I love the variety of colours in the palette. I love warm tones and I am contemplating purchasing the Unicorn Sauce palette. However, during my tutorial (if you watched the YouTube video above), I complained about the smell of the packaging. This to me was a bit of a problem, as the smell was so strong it gave me a headache.

I don’t know how to pin down the scent but it was obviously so potent that it left me with a wofting headache. I’m going to try to leave it out of it’s packaging so that the scent disappears though.

With regards to swatches, some of the shades did not swatch nicely but on my eye they blended really well and the shimmer shades were very intense even without using a make-up applicator brush.

In my video, I spoke about the correspondence and how quickly the palette arrived so if you want more information on that then please watch the video.

This is the finished look I created with the palette which I am extremely pleased with:

IMG_7386

I did recreate this look in the video so please go and watch it to see how I created this look.

Overall, I’d rate this palette an 8/10 just because I didn’t like the fact that the palette left me with a headache and I do feel that the price is a bit expensive so I don’t know if I agree with the price. In terms of pigmentation and blending I loved this palette so much! Would you like one of these palettes? I’m thinking of doing a giveaway!
