What’s new on my beauty desk – The Body Shop, SwiitchBeauty, Fitbit & More…

I have a serious online shopping problem and it is ridiculous.

DISCLAIMER: None of the products in this post are sponsored and all opinions are my own. Please do not use my photographs without my permission.

Welcome back to my beauty desk. Grab a cup of tea or coffee (or water, if you’re on a health kick like me) and let’s look at some of the things I’ve been keeping for videos, reviews and all that jazz. If you guys would like a detailed video on these products, subscribe to my YouTube channel to find out more or just get my opinion on what I thought about them (I’m filming a full face of new make-up tomorrow and I am SO exited).

Catrice Beauty Kingdom 18 colour eyeshadow palette – Cherry & Nude

IMG_6514.JPG

IMG_6519

I’m going to be honest, when I heard that Catrice launched a new range of eyeshadows, I wasn’t 100% sold on the idea. The reason for this is that I always felt that Catrice was a little bit too pricey and some of their products are really small. When I walked into Dischem, I HAD to have this palette. Cherry and nude shades are my absolute favourite and I could not ask for a better combinations of mattes and shimmers. The packaging is to die for (obviously, pink is my all time favourite colour) and it photographs so beautifully. This reminds me so much of the Urban Decay Naked Cherry palette and for R270, it’s a steal. One thing I will say is that I do not like the paint flecks on some of the shades, it makes the palette look broken to me or like mould in a sense but other than that, it is CUTE. This product was purchased at Dischem.

Make-Up Revolution Foundation Stick (F10)

IMG_6523

I have been wanting a new foundation for the longest time and when I saw that The Glam Doll Diary did a video review on this one, I knew I had to try it (a bonus that we’re the same shade so I can always count on her reviews to help me found the right shade). I’ve never tried stick foundations before so I’m really excited to see what it’s like. If I’m not mistaken, this foundation retails for R110 at Clicks.

Essence Cosmetics Super Last Eyeliner

IMG_6520

When I was watching a video with the new eyeshadow palettes from Catrice and Essence, I actually came across this baby and for R51, that was a bargain. Apparently the tip applicator glides on effortlessly and I love that because sometimes my eye gets irritated with hard eyeliner applicators. One thing that I will say is that I purchased this from Dischem and I wasn’t impressed with the packaging because it didn’t seem securely sealed. Other than that, cannot wait to test out this bad boy.

The Body Shop Matte Lip Butters

IMG_6550.JPG

I hate going into The Body Shop because it is my absolute WEAKNESS. You guys know that I’m a sucker for their make-up products and I love their matte lip liquids, so I was really curious to try these. Although the colour selection isn’t as great as the matte lip liquids, they are really dark and nude which I absolutely love (reds and nudes just look better on me, in my opinion). I’ve already tried the colour Manhattan Marigold and I received so many compliments on it, so I know I’m going to love the other shade.

SwiitchBeauty Matte Bounce Powder

IMG_6547.JPG

Thank you Springboks for winning the cup because the flash sale that SwiitchBeauty had was pretty hard to ignore. I got the Matte Bounce powder because I’ve always wanted a translucent powder and I thought it’s about time to jump on the bandwagon. One thing I will say is that the product does look a bit small. Hopefully this product will have me as shook as my bank account is after this haul. Purchased from SwiitchBeauty.

Fitbit Inspire HR

IMG_6527

I know this isn’t a beauty related purchase, but if you guys didn’t know, since June I have been trying to get into shape in terms of my fitness (and that my BMI scale told me I was obese) and recently I got a personal trainer. I purchased cheaper fitness watches before from Takealot and none of them worked. Then I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a Fitbit from Superbalist. Due to the fact that I have never ordered off Superbalist before, I could finally use the code FIRSTBUY! It was a bittersweet moment because I’ve been saving my code for something special and even though it wasn’t much, I still loved it. I;ve been wearing it for 2 days now and I can honestly say it has changed the game for me in terms of how I view my fitness stats. The watch retails for R2099, RIP bank account.

So tell me, what’s new on your beauty desk and which products are you excited to see me test out?

And so the adventure begins…

“May the flowers remind us why the rain was so necessary”

I’m not sure if I should be typing this with tears in my eyes or with content in my heart, but one thing I can say for sure is that I am at peace. As most of my followers will know, I was recently given a notice that the company I work for will no longer be hiring interns, which means that I do not have the opportunity to extend. I knew that my job wasn’t forever but I didn’t think it would be over this quickly.

I have completed 6 months of my journalism internship, which is crazy to me. It feels like just the other day I was buying a ton of stationery and getting rose gold quotes laminated so that I could have a cute little desk set up (my desk was really cute, by the way) and now it’s time for me to spread my wings and move on to another career. I’m not sure what exactly I’ll be doing, or where I’ll be going yet, but one thing I’ve come to learn is that my path has already been set out for me. God is laughing at my uncertainty right now and thinking “Is she going to trust me this time?” and as a matter of fact, I do. I saw a quote on Pinterest the other day that said “Be thankful for closed doors. They often guide us to the right one” and I don’t think I’ve ever resonated with something so deeply that it moved my soul.

I’ve always been a free-spirit. If you asked me to go on an adventure with you, I’d do it without thinking twice. I love a challenge and I’m very steadfast in my faith, so I’m basically unshakable. My internship has been the best and worst 6 months of my life. I’ve met new people (some really nice, others questionable because I wasn’t sure if they liked me, haha), had to get up at 5AM everyday and I have conquered my fear of driving long distances. I’ve been challenged and buried in work and I’ve also been enlightened and often amused at the medical content I’ve had the pleasure of researching. I’ll be writing an entirely different post on my internship experience but this is just a reminder to myself that everything is going to be ok, it always has been and it always will be. I’m currently completing my online professional diploma in social media marketing, so the possibilities are endless.

C.S. Lewis once said there are far better things ahead than any we leave behind and I am excited to keep looking forward.

To anyone dealing with unemployment, retrenchment and other forms of adversity, my Instagram DMs are always open if you need to talk. I’m sending you all my love and support, always.

But here’s to new adventures, may we walk into jobs we love and environments that make us want to get up in the morning x

Dramatic Plum Smokey Eye Tutorial – Affordable Graduation Glam Series

Never apologize for being a strong, independent woman.

The creativity bug has bitten me and I’m not going to lie, I like it. I wanted to create a variety of graduation looks because everyone is different and I’d like to cater to a variety of tastes and of course, skin tones.

I’ve always been one to shy away from bold looks but I thought I’d step out of my comfort zone and try something a bit more daring, and this is what I came up with. I won’t lie, I’m extremely impressed with how this turned out and I feel that I have definitely come a long way in terms of make-up.

My next graduation look is going to be a little more on the glamorous side of things and I cannot wait to show you what I come up with. If you’d like to see more, just click the video above and subscribe to my YouTube channel. If you’d like to be alerted when I post a new video, simply tap the bell notification next to the subscribe button and there you go – you’re all set!

What look do you think I’ll be creating next? I’m also accepting video suggestions at the moment because I need ideas for new content!

Soft Smoke – Affordable Golden Graduation Glam

“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes – understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success” – Arianna Huffington

Graduation season. A time in my life I’ve looked forward to from the moment I first witnessed graduates line up outside my university’s hall. It’s something about the way the girls grace the scene with their beautiful dresses and high heels and how dapper the men look in their suits. It’s a really big day, and rightfully so, because we as students have worked really hard to get here and it’s not everyone that can say that they’ve made it to the finish line. On your big day, the last thing you should worry about is what kind of make-up look to go for – that’s where I come in. I’ve been working on a series for graduation looks to give you a bit of inspiration for different tastes. In this look specifically I wanted something soft yet dramatic at the same time. I love how subtle yet effective this look is for graduation with golden tones to suit a variety of skin tones. I’ve listed all the products featured in the video’s description bar for easier access.

For these tutorials, I’ve tried to make it as drugstore friendly as possible so that people who may still be on the job hunt do not have to pay an arm and a leg just to look good on graduation day! The only products that I can honestly say are not drugstore would be the SwiitchBeauty products, but I did recommend alternatives in my videos.

The final look:

IMG_6258

What kind of look would you like to see for graduation? I’m working on something a little bit more dramatic for my next look and I promise it won’t be as long, I just thought I’d do one “get ready with me” and the others will probably be voiced over in order to make it easier for viewing.

My Updated Skincare Routine featuring Cetaphil Oil Control Range & Tips For Keeping Acne at Bay

I may or may not have had a killer dance party in this video, you’re welcome x

Please Note: None of the links below are affiliate links, I’m just genuinely trying to help you find these products! x

Anyone who knows me personally will know that I have struggled for the longest time with hormonal acne. My skin is extremely sensitive to heat and I often find myself breaking out after a heat rash. I’ve tried almost everything on the market and I never found any product that I could swear by religiously. Someone suggested I try out Cetaphil as it comes highly recommended by dermatologists. The first thing I tried out was the gentle skin cleanser which worked treat for my skin but wasn’t really helping with my oily skin. After doing some research, I found that Cetaphil actually has a range for acne prone skin. Cetaphil didn’t have to say anything more, I said they could take my money.

Cetaphil’s DermaControl range is formulated for acne prone skin. It is specifically designed for oil control so for all my oily girls, this is definitely something I’d recommend. I often worry that products like this will be very drying on my sensitive skin but that was not the case for me. I loved how gentle the foam wash was on my skin because a part of me always felt that if the product doesn’t foam then it isn’t working. The smell tends to bother some people as some people say it does tend to have a bit of a clincal smell, but it really doesn’t bother me.

Can we please talk about how much my photography skills have improved? I captured these on my Canon 200D using an EF 50mm f/1.8 lens.

10795012176_IMG_5471

I use the daily foam wash in conjunction with my Safeway Facial Cleanser. I love the rubber head because it’s the most gentle on my skin and it doesn’t irritate my skin as much as the exfoliating head does. If you’re looking for a pretty cool dupe for the Clarasonic Mia and you really don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, I got this baby for R150 at Clicks, thank me later. The head does alternate directions and is standard battery operated (AA). It comes with 3 different heads, but I only use the rubber head.

10794217616_IMG_5475

10795082224_IMG_5477

With regards to the moisturizer, I love the fact that it’s not a thick consistency and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. When my skin gets oily, I find myself breaking out more. I wear this underneath my make-up but I’ve noticed that my foundation (The LA Girl Pro Coverage foundation) tends to leave my skin oily after a few hours of wear. If anyone has any recommendations for a great full coverage matte foundation, please let me know! Due to the fact that the bottle is relatively small, I do tend to use this sparingly.

My only con about this product is the heavy price tag it comes with. Although I do understand that it is a great product and that it comes highly recommended, these products are really expensive. If you know my current situation, you would know that I am currently a graduate seeking employment and if I don’t get a job soon and my skincare products run out, I doubt I’ll be able to replenish them. I usually purchase my skincare products from Clicks or Dischem depending on where I can find them on special. Clicks is currently having a 3 for 2 on their Cetaphil products. The Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Moisturizer retails for R238,00 (118ml) while the DermaControl Foam Wash retails for R189,00 (236ml). Unfortunately, I cannot find the same facial cleanser as pictured above as I’ve had it for about a year, but I’ve found a similar one here which retails for R139,00.

I have been actively trying to work on my skincare since I am no longer on the pill, which really helped for my acne. I left some of my favourite tips in my video but I’ll leave a few here too:

  • I like to stay hydrated. Water is so important, I love flavoured water even though it contains more sugar, it helps with my water intake.
  • I try to wear my hair out of my face as much as I can because the grease from your hair can cause your skin to break out.
  • I’ve transitioned somewhat to almond milk instead of normal milk. Regular milk contains hormones which conflict with our hormones and result in hormonal breakouts.
  • Going to bed with make-up on? Never heard of her. I cannot get into bed with make-up on my face as it feels super gross and I know it can only result in breakouts. I love the Garnier Micellar Water which is so gentle on my skin and the best for removing make-up. I use this in conjunction with the Nature’s Nourishment Rooibos Wipes

Do you have any tips or tricks you use to keep your skin clear? If so, let me know in the comments! x

The Chronicles of the Unlucky and Unemployed – Chapter 1: Experience.

I want to pretend like I’m not writing this with tears streaming down my face and that I’m not struggling to get oxygen into my lungs, but hey it’s the truth and I am an absolute mess.

kris jenner mess

Ok, maybe that was a little bit dramatic.

Yet again I have received the soul crushing e-mail which basically says “thank you so much for putting all your time and effort into this job that we for sure looked like we were going to give you, but in actual fact we’ve only got more bad news…”

Rejection is not new to me if I’m being completely honest. Been through the job search, got the e-mails saying you’ve done great for yourself but we just don’t think you’re the right fit, blah blah blah. I’m not bothered by the rejection aspect at all, what bothers me is the fact that this process took about a solid three weeks, which required me to go into town for an interview, study for a week to write an assessment (which I aced with a solid 87% by the way) and then a whole work day on the other side of town (my petrol tank did the things guys), dedicated to learning more about what life in the business is like (sounds like they were literally preparing me to get ready for the job, right?). But, this morning I open up my e-mail to find those words we all love to hear:

“thank you so much for your application, but we’ve decided that we’re not going to move forward with you for this recruitment process”

Perfect.

simon cowell gif.gif

Obviously my hurt butt wanted to know exactly what the heck I did wrong, so naturally I had to pretend like I wasn’t falling apart so they could provide me with feedback and I kid you not, this was the response:

“The team thought you were very sweet, and clearly you were passionate about working here. You’re role play (yes, they actually made me do a painfully awkward role play) was excellent, so well done. This position comes with daily challenges and stresses and after careful consideration, the team felt that you are still quite young and inexperienced and perhaps you may not be able to handle those stresses and challenges just yet. So we recommend gaining some more life skills and experience and then you are welcome to re-apply in a years time.”

wow ok gif.gif

I have no words.

Really, I don’t. You see, age and experience you can tell from the get-go, so why was this not evident in the first round of my interviews? Most importantly, can someone please tell me where I was supposed to find experience when:

  1. I’ve been studying for the past 4 years and will get my degree next month.
  2. I’ve been balancing a job on top of my studies in order to make a bit of money on the side.
  3. You know these posts I write occasionally and those videos I make on YouTube? yeah, throw those into the mix too.

So, now what? Well, I guess the search starts from all over again. So please pray for me as I pull together the last few cents I have to go through this all. over. again.

Graduates, I feel ya’ll on a spiritual level when I say that unemployment is expensive.

help me i'm poor

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any better. Fun fact: South African graduates fall part of the large unemployment statistics because most companies in South Africa are not willing to hire students with no prior work experience. Don’t believe me? Check this out for yourself:

So let’s just get this straight: I spent 12 years in the schooling system just to obtain a matric certificate, followed by 4 years studying in the hopes of obtaining my degree (which I will receive next month). While balancing my studies I could only do part-time work as I could not commit to full-time employment (duh). Yet, it is my country who would like me to pull experience out of thin air before I can apply for an entry-level job. Yikes.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am still part of the South African unemployment statistics. Yup, it is I, who has just completed a 4 year degree in English and Communications while balancing a job in marketing, who has poured her heart and soul into creating content and of course who is constantly plagued by those unlucky e-mails trying to push me into a deep, dark place where alcohol is rife and the devil laughs at your misfortune.

Unfortunately for me, I can’t stand the taste of alcohol and I think I’ve had enough misfortune so that if the devil ever told me I’d never be able to withstand the storm, I’d whisper in his ear “babe, I am the storm”.

and so it continues, the chronicles of the unlucky and unemployed.

In the words of a true Capetonian, we kap aan.

Essence Cosmetics Ho Ho Ho Palette First Impressions and Swatches!

CLICK PLAY TO WATCH, PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!

I am a sucker for warm toned palettes. I love how they can take a look from basic to glam just by layering on a few shades. I was so proud of myself for not buying anything this Black Friday until I walked into Dischem and this palette caught my eye. I can’t remember exactly what it was but I just remember opening the palette and thinking that I HAD to have it!

IMG_4384

The packaging itself reminded me so much of the Kylie Jenner palette and the inside reminds me of the burgundy palette. I love how small and convenient this palette is for traveling, as I hate traveling with huge pans because anything can happen and we’ve all seen those airport security videos, right? Warm tones have always been something I’ve been drawn to, even though my goal is to delve into more colourful looks. The palette consists of a reasonable amount of mattes and shimmers and leans more towards reds and browns, although there is one purple shade in the palette.

IMG_4387

Here are my thoughts on the palette:

I love the packaging, I think it’s very sleek and convenient for traveling. However, I do wish that the outside was more laminated instead of plain cardboard because I am such a messy person and should the palette get wet, I’m sure it would cause significant damage to the palette and it would look horrendous at the end of the day.

All the shades are lovely and extremely pigmented (the shimmers are exceptionally amooth and buttery), but the glitter (as stunning as it is) tends to fall all over the face and is a little bit difficult to remove. This was the only bad thing I could really say but to be honest, this is expected from shades that have glitter in them. This Black Friday, Clicks was having a buy one get one free on NYX products and I purchased the NYX glitters. If you would like a review on them, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to film a video on those too!

Here is a close up of the look I created with this palette:

If you would like, I’ll have a post related to a bunch of blogging ideas so that you can start your challenge too!

How To: Flawless Foundation + First Impressions: The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow

–CLICK PLAY TO WATCH, PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE–

DISCLAIMER: This post is NOT sponsored and all links in this post are NOT affiliate, just here to help you out if you would like to purchase.

Foundation is always an essential part of my beauty routine. I particularly enjoy the art of painting my face and creating a veil which can either mask a pretty nasty breakout or accentuate my natural dew. However, foundation is one of those things that can be really tricky if you’re a beginner. Questions that may arise for a first time often include: how do I know what my correct shade is? Why does my foundation turn orange? How do I look more matte if I’m oily or more dewy if my skin is dry?

Look no further, I’ve got you.

In this particular video, I’ve addressed all the issues related to foundation that can take your foundation game from 0 to 100 really quickly. I’ve also decided to compile a blog post to let in on all my tips and tricks, holy grail products and everything you need to know to step up your foundation game.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: CLEAN UP YOUR ACT

A clean face is essential before applying foundation. This is because your foundation is more likely to look less flawless if you’re applying foundation to dirty skin (which could lead to a nasty breakout) or even worse, reapplying a new layer of foundation on top of an previous one.

If you’re an oily girl like me, you’ll know the struggle when it comes to being shiny. When I did my research about oily skin and applying foundation to skin that’s oily (and has not been cleaned), it can actually cause your foundation to turn orange in colour. This is due to a process called oxidation.

Oxidation: A chemical reaction that happens when chemicals in the foundation react to oxygen or excess oils.

In order to remove any dirt and excess oils on my skin, I use my cotton rounds and Garnier Micellar Water which is suitable for even sensitive skin. It retails for about R64,95 for a full size and is available at most drugstores. I purchased mine from Clicks. It removes make-up too so it doubles for when you need to take your face off. I have the on-the-go travel size and it lasted so long, considering that I’ve had it for about 3 months now. I am obsessed with it and it does not irritate my skin because it is perfume-free. It’s excellent for removing make-up, but I’ll have a detailed post on it in the near future. I make sure to clean my entire face, all the way down to my neck, because we’ll be applying foundation there too.

IMG_7066(1)

Something that goes hand in hand with cleaning your face, is getting hair out of it too. The dirt from your hair can get into your skin and can cause break-outs. When applying make-up, always ensure that your hair is out of your face.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE – MOISTURIZE

Now that our skin is clean and good to go for the rest of our make-up application, we need to moisturize our skin. Moisturizer ensures a smooth canvas for make-up application and helps your primer (which is the next step) adhere to the moisturizer, making sure it does not get lost in the skin.

In this tutorial, I moisturized with The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow Face Mist. You can use a primer water, setting spray or a lotion-type moisturizer. I used to use the Isabella Garcia Day Defense Moisturizer and I’m a huge fan of the African Extracts Day Lotion. If you want a more matte finish, I’d recommend an oil-free moisturizer or setting spray.

IMG_1510

In all honesty, my face absorbed all the mist that was sprayed onto my face. It didn’t really leave me with a healthy glow below my foundation, but did a great job at hydrating my skin like a moisturizer would.

PRIME TIME

Once your moisturizer has settled into your skin, it’s time to move onto primer. Primer is going to work hand in hand with your moisturizer to give your skin exactly what it needs. When buying a primer, a good rule of thumb is to go for something you know you need. Are your pores visible when it comes to make-up application? If so, a pore minimizer should do the trick. A bit oily and want a more subtle look? An anti-shine primer is what you’re looking for. After a little bit of glow? An illuminating primer will help to give your skin a natural glow.

In this tutorial I opted for the LA Girl Pro Prep HD Smoothing Face Primer. I prefer applying primer with my hands, all over my face with a specific focus on my T-Zone and pore problem areas. This minimizes the appearance of my pores and helps my skin look extra smooth.

IMG_1495

FOUNDATION STATION

Here’s the fun part. I love everything about foundations and I’ve been in the make-up game long enough to know exactly what works and what doesn’t. The right tools are essential for the job. There are two types of foundation brushes. A buffing brush helps to push product into the skin. My holy grail foundation brush is the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. There is also a flat foundation brush which is great for applying foundation, however I’m not a fan of the streaks it leaves in my face.

It’s important to know what coverage you’re after in a foundation.

Coverage: the opacity or transparency of the foundation (ranges from light to medium to full)

If you want something full coverage, you’d go for a foundation that you’re going to throw on for events or maybe to cover acne scarring. This ensures that the skin doesn’t really show through the foundation. In this video, I used the LA Girl Pro Coverage foundation in Warm Beige. I love this foundation with all my heart and soul because it’s buildable and it does not feel heavy on my skin.

If you’re after an everyday foundation, you’d go for a BB Cream or tinted moisturizer.

BB Cream/Tinted Moisturizer: Lighter in texture than a foundation and is often used to even out skin tone.

I used to love BB Creams but I just cannot get myself to wear make-up everyday. I firmly believe that you need to give your skin a break from wearing make-up because wearing make-up everyday speeds up the ageing process and can result in acne breakouts.

To find your shade of foundation, you can ask a skincare consultant to colour match you.

Colour match: Finding your correct shade of foundation through a series of testing colours within your shade range.

I personally hate it when people colour match me because I’ve been colour matched incorrectly twice before and I hate spending my hard-earned money only to waste it on something that is either too light, too dark or just makes me look orange. My hack for finding my correct shade is taking a foundation I know I’m a 100% match in and swatching other foundations next to it. That way, I know one is my perfect shade and that needs to be what I go for. I also find out that there are now apps which help you find your correct shade online. I personally haven’t tried it but I would like to. Would you like to see a video on that?

Next, we’re going to use our foundation brush and just drag all the product on our skin. Make sure to get your neck too because we can’t have our neck and our face being two different colours. In order to ensure even application of the foundation, you want to go in with a damp beauty blender. The one I used in the video is not from Beauty Blender but I remember buying it at Dischem and it does exactly the same job and isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg.

Damp Beauty Blender: Allows for streak-free blending and dewy finishes.

It’s so important to smooth out products on the skin, because if you applied too much in a certain area, that is where it is going to cake on you.

Cake: Where foundation or concealer sits on the skin and looks visibly thick instead of smooth and seamless.

FLAWLESS FINISH

This is where The Body Shop Rose Dewy Glow really shined (literally)  in this video. When finishing your foundation, you can either use a setting spray (provided that you have all your other make-up on) or you can go more matte and use a setting powder instead.

Setting Powder: Blurs fine lines and pores and ensures that make-up stays in place all day.

Overall, my first impressions on the product was that it definitely did its job, only when it came to finishing off my foundation. It didn’t really do anything as a primer.
