The Chronicles of the Unlucky and Unemployed – Chapter 2: Unemployment is Expensive.

PSA: To all my lovely readers in the same boat as I am, it is not our season yet. You are loved. Massively. Ferociously. Unconditionally. The universe is totally freaking out about how awesome you are. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone seeking employment at the moment x.

Another unsuccessful week has gone by in terms of the job search but we must remain hopeful. This week was incredibly difficult for me personally because I felt like I had really hit an all time low when it came to looking for work. I know, everything happens in it’s own time (God has his timing and it’s just not my season yet). However, I wanted to touch on something that has touched me personally and that I feel is not talked about enough among graduates from university or unemployed job seekers.

Recruitment processes. I have a love-hate relationship with them. Obviously it forms part and parcel of getting a job which is understandable, but I’m talking about processes that can take anywhere from weeks to months. I love the idea of getting to know the company and seeing what life is like behind the scenes, but I don’t think that businesses understand how expensive processes like these are, especially if there’s a chance that the potential employee might not be hired at all. To give you guys a bit of background, I recently went through a strenuous recruitment process which took place over the course of a month. It required me to be in different parts of town, which included central and north (about 30-40 minute drives each for me) and also required studying and completing assessments. I know I’m going to sound like a complete geek, but I genuinely enjoyed the studying aspect. Being fresh out of university gave me that competitive edge and I’m not new to burning the midnight oil in order to ace results. However, two steps away from the final interview, I was told that they would not be moving forward with me with that recruitment process. What killed me was that I had put so much time and effort in because I really, really wanted this job and I thought I was a perfect fit. Not only that, but after a month of patiently waiting for answers, buying new clothes to meet whom I thought would be my potential employee, filling up my tank to drive to the other side of town and purchasing a few odds and ends (like printing study notes, etc.), I found myself really broke.

I am truly fortunate to have my own car, but I don’t think people understand that not everyone has their own forms of transportation. As someone who only got her car a few months ago, I decided it would be best to Uber to town as I wasn’t comfortable driving to town on my own in peak morning traffic. Luckily my grandfather offered to take me (and might I add, took me through his work which made a really nifty shortcut). However, if I had to Uber to town that would’ve cost me about R250 from where I live (which would have totalled a whopping R500 for me to get back home), R300 to take me to the North side of town (R600 total to get home) and add in the fact that I needed a white blouse (which was requested by the employer) which I could only find at Woolworths for some reason (I won’t even mention the price, but please know it cost me a pretty penny) and of course if you didn’t have internet and you needed to communicate back and forth (to complete my assessment) which would have probably cost around R50 for printing as well. If my total is correct (maths was never my strong suit) this process could have cost close to the tune of R1250 for someone who used Uber. All of this, just to be told that you didn’t get the job.

I’m not necessarily upset about the situation anymore,  because looking back, I genuinely enjoyed the recruitment process and I understand now that maybe I was destined for something better. I just feel that it is quite unfair for unemployed students or job seekers to have to go through such extensive recruitment processes when it is evident that we lack certain criteria for the job. In my case, I was told that I was too young and lacked “life experience”. In my CV, the first bit of information under my name is my date of birth and in my academic history it is stated that I graduate this year.

The job search in itself is already so hard and it is evident that one of the biggest groups that suffer the most is students who have just graduated from university. Not everyone has money to complete some of these processes too, which is heartbreaking. Moral of the story: unemployment is expensive. My heart really goes out to people who use public transport or have to use internet cafes to get work done, it really does impact on the pocket. Not to mention, over the course of a month, it was possible to find other opportunities as well, but you’re so focused on the recruitment process you’re already in because you think you’re so close to the finish line.

What are your thoughts on recruitment processes?

A new week. Let’s go.

We kap aan.

The First Week of January Went Like This: Weekly Recap 2019.

“You know all those things you’ve always wanted to do? You should go do them”

–CLICK PLAY TO WATCH, PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE X–

And so another year begins. Happy new year to all, I trust that this year will be filled with everything your heart desires and nothing but success and happiness wherever you go. I don’t particularly enjoy making new year’s resolutions, after all you have 365 days to be the change you want to see in the world. Whether you start on the first of January or the middle of August, it makes no difference as long as you get the job done. I have a video going up soon about the goals I aim to achieve in 2019, but that has been put on hold until the job hunt bears fruit. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as this is the year I’m thrown into the working world and trust that I myself am keeping the job seekers in my thoughts at this time too.

The first week of January was a whirlwind to say the least. The year began with a spontaneous adventure to the gym, which was very hard for me personally as I am still learning to love all my curves and edges.

On the second of January I said goodbye to my grandfather as I had planned to leave for vacation the next day. I’ve always hated hospitals and this time was no different. As my grandfather has Alzheimers, he could not remember me but held my hand for the last time. A bittersweet moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.

img_5100

They say good things come in three’s. On the third of January, I packed my camera and lenses in for a trip to Montagu with my grandparents (my mom’s parents), mother, brother and dad. I love road trips, it sparks my sense of adventure and gets my creativity flowing (yes, I made a travel diary). I decided that on this vacation, I wanted to explore more and get out of my comfort zone. Not before I got a few shots for Instagram though.

img_4955

To be honest, I don’t really remember what happened on the 4th of January. I think I decided to take a break from everything and just enjoy what the resort had to offer. For those wondering, my family and I stayed in the chalets in Montagu Springs. It’s self catering apartments and I loved every minute of it. I’ve grown up staying in hotels and this was so different. Although I did end up sleeping on the couch because I tend to get claustrophobic in dark spaces and the kiddies room is as tiny as a cupboard. But hey, all part of the adventure! I also tried poitjiekos for the first time and I have to say, I loved it! Apparently I’ve had it when I was younger but I really don’t remember having it so it does not count. I also stepped behind the camera a few times, my favourite shots to capture are the unexpected ones.

img_4734

The 5th of January brought about somewhat of an adventure. I decided to golf with the boys. On my mom’s side of the family, all my cousins are boys and on my dad’s side of the family, all my cousins are girls. Nonetheless, we made a day out of it. Although I suck at most sports, I did take a few great shots (emphasis on a few). Montagu has an amazing golf course which offers scenic views and a breathtaking landscape, which makes for an amazing backdrop for photos! Although I was in charge of driving the golf cart, that didn’t mean I couldn’t steal my cousin (who is an amazing photographer) for a few minutes to take a few photos.

img_4904

The 6th of January was the day we as a family decided to make the most out of the last day we had left. Unfortunately, this would also be the day that my grandfather would leave this world and become one of the angels above, watching over the rest of our family. RIP Pa, I love you. These are some of the shots we took on the day, which you can find on my Instagram

img_5048

img_5049

The 7th of January just meant packing up to go home. If anyone knows me, I am the type of person who loves to sleep on roadtrips, I’m a pro napper indeed. I’m truly grateful that I made it home safely, but it’s time for me to get back to my passion which is writing and creating content. I am currently on the job hunt, so please remember to keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

My Night Routine ft. Lux Body Wash

Hello beautiful and welcome back to my blog!

–video is still loading, I will come back to insert it here. I was just scared I was going to miss my deadline–

I thought that I’d share my night routine and what goes into my relaxation process. I am a home body and I really enjoy coming home after a long day and simply winding down. Let me know if you enjoy being at home too!

So after a long day the first thing I like to do is get inside and change into some comfortable clothes which include: boyfriends hoodie and leggings. I then like to curl up on my couch and watch some TV (if there isn’t a bunch of nonsense playing) and allow my brain to unwind.

Then often times hunger strikes so I like to opt for healthy meals at night, I very rarely eat meat because I feel that it makes me sick. Some of my favourite foods to eat include: mac and cheese with a side of vegetables or seafood paella. If I feel like eating out then I opt for the Cobb Salad from Kauai, no egg.

Bath time is my favourite time of the night and I love using the Lux Body Wash. Rubybox was kind enough to send me a bunch of these (As I mentioned, I am having a giveaway.) and I love both scents. The purple is Sheer Twilight with fragrance pearls of Black Orchid and Juniper oil. I love using this when I go out because I always get complimented on the fragrance. If I’m staying home or cuddling with Matthew for a movie night then I opt for the pink which is Soft Touch with silk essence and pink floral infusion. It leaves my skin noticeably softer and always makes me smell so fresh and soft.

FullSizeRender(2).jpg

After a bath I like to make myself a nice cup of tea for when I watch YouTube videos in bed and then I like to turn off all my electronics at least an hour before bed (I have the most vivid dreams and if I watch something weird on YouTube I will be dreaming about it later that night).

And that is my night routine! As I mentioned, there will be a video which I will come back to insert but I did have a deadline and could not risk missing it.

-DISCLAIMER: This post was NOT sponsored, these products were sent to me by RubyBox Beauty in exchange for a review HOWEVER I have been using Lux already, so it was already incorporated into my night routine xo.

20 Things I’d Like To Do Now That I’m 20

Hello my amazing readers, I cannot believe it’s that time again where I’m sitting down in front of my laptop and just writing a post for you guys. I am beyond excited to announce that my Kendall Jenner Inspired Red Lip Tutorial has been featured on Yardley London South Africa’s Instagram Page! You can find their profile by looking up yardleylondon_sa and leaving me some love if you would like to x. Also: I am filming a Q&A for my YouTube channel so if you’d like to leave me questions in the comments then please feel free to do so.

For those of you who didn’t know, I turned 20 on the 8th of August 2016 and this basically means that I am no longer a teenager and slowly but surely making my way into the adult world. I’ve come up with a few goals or things that I would personally like to achieve during my 20’s and I just want to inspire others to set goals for themselves and make the most out of life. Let me know if you have any goals you’ve set out for yourself in the comments!

  1. Get My Driver’s License: This is my number one priority at the moment and I am so so nervous to complete my driver’s test this month. I feel that this would be an amazing way to enter into my adult phase as having your driver’s gives you a sense of freedom and responsibility. Please keep your fingers crossed for me this month!
  2. Travel: Being someone who has never been overseas yet, I’m very keen on traveling and getting a job in order to save money and just explore new places and try new things. I promised myself that I’ve always wanted to go into a career that involves a lot of traveling to make up for what I’ve missed out on. Wanderlust is too real out here!
  3. Get My Degree: I am a double major in English and Language and Communication Studies, so I am always forced to work extremely hard because in South Africa, BA and English Degrees are not given enough credit and it is often difficult to find work. A degree would mean a great sense of accomplishment for me so I would love to obtain this and add it to the office wall in my future home.
  4. Intern at Cosmopolitan or  any other fashion/beauty magazine: Although Cosmopolitan is top of my list, I wouldn’t mind interning for a beauty or fashion related magazine. I firmly believe that experience is everything in my industry and you can never have too much experience, however you can be over-qualified. How I see it is that I’m going to obtain my degree, intern and then complete my post grad in journalism. There are bursaries available to help with this and if I do obtain a bursary I walk straight into a job after my studies. Hard work never killed anyone!
  5. Own my own apartment: As much as I love being around my family, when I turned 20 I suddenly felt the need for my own personal space. Having no personal space in my house can be very frustrating sometimes and it’s not the best of situations. I hope to have my own place before the age of 25.
  6. Get Married: I know life is unpredictable and I’m not the type of person to set my heart on someone quickly but my family usually get married around 23-29 and I’ve always been in love with the idea of love.
  7. Have my first child: To be honest, I want this more than anything. I’ve had baby fever for the longest time and I love children so no surprise here.
  8. Learn a new language: I hope that with traveling and going to new places, I am able to absorb the culture and learn new languages along the way. I find learning to be so much fun and very interesting so this is a must for me
  9. New experiences: I would love to try new things and start going to various events. Being someone with social and actually wanting to put myself out there, it’s a very scary thought and exciting at the same time.
  10. Conquer my fear of putting myself out there: When I was bullied throughout high school, I was in such a bad place that when I transitioned to university it was really difficult for me to make friends and to this day I can’t start a conversation unless someone talks to me. I just want to get over this because it ruins so many aspects of my life and it’s time that I do things for myself.
  11. Win a competition: If you follow me on snapchat (just_deeanne) you would know that yesterday I posted a snap saying that I have never won a competition in my life. I feel I’m going to enter all the competitions I can and hopefully win something.
  12. Take my mom & grandma on the vacation of their dreams: A lot of my success I owe to my grandma and my mom. They were always there for me in the sense that they always pushed me to do better and never t give up. I honestly don’t think I would be at university if it were not for my grandma and my mom. Thank you ladies.
  13. Grow spiritually and deeper in my faith: I love God and everything about my religion, I just want to be spiritual on a much deeper level and just reach a point in my faith where I can honestly say I’m happy where I am.
  14. Go to a music festival: I’ve always wanted to go to ULTRA or just a music festival in general and enjoy myself and live it up.
  15. Adrenaline Sport FTW: I will bungee jump, water ski or white water raft before I turn 30 and this is not optional.
  16. Maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle: I’ve recently started eating so much healthier and exercising regularly. It feels so good to know that my body is in good shape and that I’m no longer lethargic and eating unhealthily.
  17. Go camping or on a road trip with a bunch of friends: This has always been one of the goals I’ve always wanted to achieve. Friendship is important to me in so many ways and I can’t wait to do this.
  18. Be financially independent: I never want to ask anyone for money and I want to work as hard as I possibly can so that I can be financially independent and never have to look at the price tag on an item of clothing ever again.
  19. Become the editor in chief of a magazine: The ultimate goal. YAAAS.
  20. Be happy with life and myself in general: I think that everyone should aspire to be happy with life and just happy with themselves in general.

See you next time lovely!

DIY Lip Scrub/Exfoliator

Hi Everyone!

I have started scheduling my posts because it’s really difficult for me living in South Africa to cater for the majority of my readers living in a different time zone. I just wanted to know if I’m the only one who experiences problems with scheduling posts or? Anyway, it’s Winter here where I live so I thought it would be a great idea to do a DIY.

I suffer from chapped lips during the winter and I always made the mistake of running for the chapstick. For me chapstick actually dries out my lips even more so I found out that exfoliating your lips is actually better than moisturizing it constantly. Hope you enjoy!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon
  • Honey: 1 tablespoon
  • Olive Oil: 1 teaspoon
  • Vaseline or Shea Butter: 1 teaspoon (Coconut oil and jojoba oil are also alternatives)
  • 1 small container

Combine all the ingredients into the small container and apply to the lips. If your lips are very sensitive or overly cracked then I recommend applying very gently so that you do not cause damage to the area.

Would you like to see more DIY posts? These posts always get a very positive reaction so I am more than willing to do it for you!

I have a review coming tomorrow and a new YouTube video coming on Friday.

Beauty For Beginners Series: Beauty Life Hacks

I’ve just finished watching a great episode of Come Dine With me and I have to say, I’m addicted. My heart hurts when I have to write that this is the last feature of my Beauty For Beginners Series, and it has done so well over time. I really want to continue blogging daily and I will, maybe with a day or two off as I am busy studying for exams, I write my mid-year exams which kicks off on Monday but luckily I have great spaces in which I can balance my studies with my blog. Tomorrow I will be uploading my first vlog and it would mean so much to me if you subscribed in the mean time by clicking here xo.

Without any further delay, here it is, my final installment of Beauty For Beginners xo

IG PROMO POST

  1. You can use your foundation brush to pat on your under-eye concealer if yours does not have an applicator. I have a whole post about Beauty For Beginners Series: Brushes if you’re interested.
  2. If you thought your Beauty Blender was just for blending foundation, you couldn’t be more wrong. You can remove harsh contour lines and remove excess product.
  3. An angled blush brush can be used to contour your face, not just to apply blush.
  4. Messy lipstick edges? Grab your concealer brush to clean it up without ruining the rest of your make-up.
  5. Want your eye shadow to appear more smokey? Try running the shadow below your lash line for a smokey eye effect.
  6. If you need to hide your eyelash glue, try dipping a fanning brush in gel liner and applying it over the glue.
  7. Did you know that if you want a matte lip, you can use a normal lipstick? Simply place a tissue or tissue paper over your lips and apply pressed powder over the tissue. Voila, matte lipstick and it lasts all day!
  8. To appear more awake, use a white eye shadow in the inner corners of your eyes.
  9. To highlight the eye area, add highlighter below the brow bone and in the middle of the lid.
  10. If you want to make your eyes appear bigger, run a nude eye pencil on your lower lash line.
  11. Lipstick can double as a blush if you ever run out. Apply lipstick to your cheekbone and blend into the skin.
  12. To make your eye shadow pop simply cover your lid with white eye pencil before applying the eye shadow.

Hope you’ve enjoyed my series and thank you for everyone who has shown this series so much love. It really motivates me to put out more content on my blog when you get amazing feedback.

Beauty For Beginners Series: Brushes

Hi everyone! I trust that you all had an amazing weekend, and that you’re excited for today’s post. Today I’m going to be starting a new series on my blog, Beauty For Beginners where I talk about my all time favourite holy grail products and what I think would be great things to use, especially if you’re starting out. I only started experimenting with make-up when I was in my senior year of high school, and 2 years later I’m not a pro, but I’ve learned a few great things along the way. Today’s topic is brushes and what I feel you should be starting out with, what the purposes of the brushes are and how you can use them to the best of your ability.

An important tip to note when it comes to brushes: Natural bristles work best with powder products and synthetic bristles work best with liquid or cream products.

The Foundation Brush:

IMG_1480.JPG

The foundation brush is used to smooth out liquid or cream foundation for streak-free application. Alternatively, it can also be used to pat on under-eye concealer. My favourite brush is from Cala Cosmetics and it’s the 303 brush, purchased from Dis-Chem. Really affordable but not a must-have. Some people prefer to put on foundation with their fingers, but in the end it’s really about what works for you.

The Beauty Blender:

IMG_1478.JPG

A beauty blender is a sponge which you use the sponge’s broad sides to smooth out product on your face. You can use the tip to reach creases around the nose and to pinpoint small areas. Alternatively you can apply cream blush, blend out harsh makeup lines, and remove excess product. I unfortunately do not own a real Beauty Blender although I wish I did, but I do own a similar sponge from Big Apple Cosmetics which I purchased a while back. You can also purchase sponges from Dis-Chem but I found their sponges extremely harsh on my skin.

Blush Brush/Angled Contour Brush:

IMG_1477.JPG

Truth be told, on the packaging of the image seen above it did say blush brush but it is actually an angled contour brush. It can however be used to apply blush. The slanted bristles make it easier to apply products perfectly to your cheekbones. Alternatively you can apply contour powder (two shades darker than your skin tone) below your cheekbones to emphasize your natural contours. This brush is from Pupa cosmetics

Concealer Brush:

I have unfortunately forgot to add my concealer brush to the mix, but basically a concealer brush is used to pinpoint specific areas that need extra coverage. Alternatively you can clean up messy edges when it comes to filling in your brows and lipstick. I purchased my concealer brush from Ralo Cosmetics.

Eye Shadow Brush:

IMG_1475.JPG

An eyeshadow brush is used to evenly apply powder and cream shadows. Dab on shadow under the lower lash line for a smokier eye. The eyeshadow brush pictured above is from Pupa Cosmetics. This is a great brush and I would definitely recommend it.

Blending Brush:

IMG_1473.JPG

This brush has changed my life in so many ways. Essence Cosmetics is a very underrated brand and their brushes are nothing short of amazing. The fluffy bristles diffuse eye shadow in the crease of your eye and give shadows a softer finish so that there are no harsh lines. This brush has the cutest doodles on it and comes in the colour lavender. What’s not to love?

Fan Brush:

IMG_1472.JPG

Use this to clean up fallen product or gently apply powders. Love using this to highlight on my cheekbone and give my face a glowy finish. This brush came free in the Cosmopolitan magazine and I have no issues with it, except that it was originally supposed to be a foundation brush but the bristles were way too thin and loose to apply foundation. It’s always important to note that you don’t HAVE to own every single brush there is, being a student I understand the struggle and make the best with what I have.

Powder Brush/All Over Brush:

IMG_1470.JPG

Simply put, this brush is used to apply powder to the skin for a smooth finish and also to clean up highlight, contour and blush. My powder brush isn’t the best, but does the job pretty well so I can’t complain.

I’m very excited to announce that I have my own Facebook page! You can find me by looking up Sincerely, Deeanne and please give me the thumbs up.

Stay tuned for a great week of tips for beginners!

My Lazy Day 2016 Winter Morning Routine

Hi everyone! I still have one more Mother’s day post going up on the blog tonight, but I thought I’d just come and tell you more about my YouTube channel. As I have mentioned before, I do have my own YouTube channel called JustDeeanneDIY where I post content similar to my blog. Below is my Lazy Day Winter Morning Routine for 2016. Please take a look as it would mean so much to me!

Typically on a lazy day, I really like to catch up on some sleep so I usually wake up at about 10AM. Then I cannot get up until I check my phone to see if I have any notifications (Which I don’t most of the time). From there I will make my way over to my super comfy slippers and if you watched the video, both my onesie and my slippers are from Mr. Price. I usually go get some fruit in the kitchen and some coffee because I’m not always very big on breakfast and then I proceed to brush my teeth. After that I make my way to my room to check my laptop, email and maybe work on some blogposts.

In the shower the typical products I use are:

Schwarzkopf BC BonaCure repair kit Shampoo and Conditioner.

Clean and Clear blackhead scrub

Detangling comb from Clicks.

On a typical lazy day I usually go to the mall and drive past the beach and the scenery in the video was truly amazing.

I’ve hit 200 subscribers on my YouTube channel! Are you subscribed? If you are, let me know in the comments!

30 Day Blogging Challenge: Day 26 – What’s In My Backpack?

Hi everyone!

So I just recently uploaded my What’s In My Backpack video. I’m going to give the rundown here on my blog for those who can’t access YouTube but if you can please feel free to watch, subscribe and give it a thumbs up ❤️.

Basics:

– Cellphone: Basically, I’m obsessed with all my social media. I love keeping in touch with all my subscribers on YouTube and replying to comments on my blog so this is a definite must for me. A lot of people ask me where is my phone case from and it is from Typo but I wouldn’t recommend it because the glitter at the back comes off and looks really gross. I do have a new cover on my phone with an Eiffel Tower on it so I am so happy.

– Earphones: Definitely a must for me because my boyfriend listens to a lot of crude music which is a bit much for me so I prefer to have my own music and I wrote a lot of papers and I do not like silence so I have to have these babies with me at all times.

– Wallet: Even though I am your average broke student I like to have my wallet on me just in case I need money for food or textbooks even though I never keep money in my wallet because I’m super paranoid about being robbed or having my money stolen.

– My Student Card + Keys: I always have this on me because I can’t go anywhere without it. I have already started my driving lessons so hopefully one day my car keys will be attached to that bunch.

– File: To store my notes in before I paste them into my book.

– Binder: To store my notes in when I don’t have time to file them because when we print we have to get out of the line to accommodate the next person.

– Hardcover: I rarely carry this unless I have time to sort out my notes and study in the library.

– Prayer Book: Great book to have for when I feel anxious or need reassurance.

– Pencil Case: stores all my writing supplies as well as my stapler, stapler remover and extra staples.

– Emergency Bag: For when aunt flow comes to visit and when I need to freshen up because nobody wants to be smelly.

Hope you enjoyed a little peek of what’s in my backpack ❤️.
